Ingredients

Scale
  • 800g sweet potatoes
  • 400g ground meat (chicken or beef)
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 200ml heavy cream
  • 100g grated cheese (cheddar type)
  • 200ml vegetable broth
  • 1 teaspoon sweet pepper or paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 180°C. This ensures your gratin cooks evenly and develops a nice golden crust.
  2. Peel the sweet potatoes and slice them thinly, about 3 mm thick. A mandoline can be useful for achieving even slices.
  3. In a large skillet, heat a little olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes.
  4. Add the minced garlic to the onion and cook for another minute, until fragrant, but be careful not to burn it.
  5. Incorporate the ground meat into the skillet. Cook over medium heat for 5-7 minutes, stirring frequently, until the meat is nicely browned.
  6. Season with sweet pepper or paprika, salt, and pepper. Mix well to ensure the spices coat the meat evenly.
  7. In a baking dish, start by spreading a layer of sweet potatoes on the bottom, about half of the total amount.
  8. Next, evenly add the meat mixture on top of the sweet potatoes, then cover with the remaining sweet potatoes to form a second layer.
  9. Gently pour the heavy cream over the top of the gratin, making sure to distribute it well.
  10. Evenly add the vegetable broth on top, which will help cook the sweet potatoes.
  11. Generously sprinkle the grated cheese over the top of the gratin for a golden and flavorful crust.
  12. Bake the gratin for about 40 minutes or until it is nicely golden on top. Check the doneness of the sweet potatoes with a knife.
  13. Once cooked, let the gratin rest for a few minutes before serving. This will allow the flavors to meld and make serving easier.
